Reception Desk Volunteer

Monday - Friday   11:00 a.m. - 3 p.m.   5 Volunteer maximum:

Volunteers will provide phone coverage at the front desk, while staff receptionist is on their lunch break or out of the office on errands. Volunteers will be required to answer phones professionally and provide appropriate information to callers, as well as have a positive attitude when greeting incoming guests.

Requirements: Weekly commitment for a minimum of 3 months.
Administrative Assistant Volunteer
Tuesdays & Thursdays    8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.   2 Volunteer maximum

Volunteers will be used to file paperwork, input data into the computer, faxing, and making copies. Volunteers may also be asked to run simple errands, check voicemail, and other duties as requested.

Requirements: Weekly commitment for a minimum of 1 month.
Computer Instructor Volunteer
Monday, Tuesdays & Thursdays   5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.   2 Volunteer maximum

Volunteers will be used to teach our students basic computer skills, to create marketable skill set, enabling them to have additional educational and employment opportunities. This position requires a strong knowledge of basic Windows computer programs (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.). The position also requires the ability to teach computer skills to students with minimal or no computer knowledge.

We have a modest computer lab of 8 computers, with 10 to 15 students participating in our program at a time. If you are willing to donate a working computer, computer desk and chair, and/or printer - all items that would be found in a current office setting - please let us know. No outdated systems please.

Requirements: Weekly commitment for a minimum of 2 months.
Cultural Arts/Music Instructor Volunteer
Monday, Tuesdays & Thursdays   5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.   3 Volunteer maximum

Volunteers will be used to teach one or more areas of art or music. Instructor must be available at least one evening per week for 4 weeks. We ask that volunteers bring any additional materials and supplies that they require for their class instruction.

Requirements: Weekly commitment for a minimum of 1 month.
Tutorial Volunteer
Monday, Tuesdays & Thursdays   4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.   5 Volunteer maximum

This position requires volunteers to have significant knowledge in at least one of the following subjects: Math, English, Science, Social Studies, or a Foreign Language. The tutors will work with students one-on-one or in small groups of youth, ages 8 - 16.

Requirements: Weekly commitment for a minimum of 2 months.
Teen/Student Mentor
Monday, Tuesdays & Thursdays   4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.   No Volunteer maximum

Mentors will be matched with youth to build a relationship based on trust, friendship, and respect. Mentors are asked to commit to a weekly visit with the student(s) they are mentoring, for the sense of consistency for the youth. All mentoring will take place onsite at the Ash Tree location or during program field trips.

Requirements: Weekly commitment for a minimum of 3 months.
Meal-A-Month Volunteer
Monday, Tuesdays & Thursdays   5:15 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.   8 Volunteer maximum

Volunteers will be asked to prepare and deliver one meal a month, for 15 - 20 youth participants. The students of our program are usually on a 'reduced lunch' meal plan at school and often come to the afternoon program hungry. It is Ash Tree's desire to see each child fed a well-balanced meal that they might not receive upon returning home.

Requirements: Monthly commitment for a minimum of 4 months.
Motivational Speaker
Monday, Tuesdays & Thursdays   5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.   No Volunteer maximum

Volunteers will be used to address groups of teenage participants and or their families, giving an inspirational message or educational information. Speakers may seek to do regular, monthly engagements or once every other month. If speaking on educational information, please bring auxiliary materials such as pamphlets, brochures, or flyers.

Requirements: Once every other month commitment for a minimum of 3 months.
Handy Man/Custodial Volunteer
Monday - Thursdays   5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.   4 Volunteer maximum

Volunteers will be used to perform minor repairs on a needed basis and provide janitorial services.

Ash Tree can provide basic cleaning supplies, however, we ask that anyone wishing to assist us with minor repairs, bring their own tools.

Requirements: Weekly commitment for a minimum of 1 month.
Volunteer Agreement:
I agree to:
  • Follow staff instruction and complete duties as assigned. Ask for help, as needed. Report possible hazards or unsafe activities to staff.
  • Anyone under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol will not be permitted to volunteer.
  • Come dressed to volunteer. Closed toe shoes and long pants are required. Sandals, tank tops, shorts, offensive clothing and walkmans/radios are not permitted. All volunteers must wear a name badge for easy identification.
  • Running, shouting, and general horseplay is not permitted.
  • Ash Tree education materials, arts & crafts, computer software, and etc. may not be taken from the premises. Unauthorized possession will be considered stealing and will lead to immediate discontinuation of volunteering.
  • Harassment of any kind is not tolerated by staff or volunteers. Any behavior intended to create discord or restricting volunteers or staff from working will not be tolerated. Report incidents immediately to staff.
  • Youth volunteers (ages 14-17) must have signed parental permission, in order to volunteer. Youth ages 14 and 15 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years of age or older; they are to be monitored on a continuous basis.
  • Volunteers leaving before the end of a shift must advise staff.

  • Upon receipt, your application will be reviewed and references contacted.
  • After step 2 is satisfactorily completed, you will be contacted for an interview / information session.
  • Criminal background checks will be performed on all new adult volunteers upon acceptance of volunteer assignment offer.
  • The final step prior to beginning your training with a mentor in your assigned area is orientation.
